Formed in a cold warehouse in Manchester in 2015, The Empty Page are a trio of Mancunians writing songs with an infectious pop sensibility, layered with a healthy dose of fuzz and shot through with that grim up North poeticism that their regional forefathers The Smiths and Joy Division indelibly left as a legacy to Manc musicians hereafter. Also taking inspiration from over-the-pond 90s alternative giants like The Pixies, Sonic Youth and Mudhoney, The Empty Page bring that vintage 90s sound right into the 21st century with glorious aplomb.
When legendary producer Gggarth Richardson (of Biffy Clyro, Melvins and Rage Against The Machine fame) heard their rough demos The Ancoats Sessions he asked them to pay him a visit in his forest studio in Canada to record their forthcoming debut album. The band were keen to record the album in a short space of time to retain a sense of playing live in a room and to not spend too much time polishing and perfecting things. The result is a warm, honest collection of songs from the heart with barely a whiff of the tinny, processed, squeaky-cleanness of many a modern rock band’s sound but instead with a welcome amount of grit that has been sorely missed in music of late.
Early demo reviews compared the band to Bikini Kill, Fugazi and The Smashing Pumpkins and all of these influences can be heard in the ten songs showcased on ‘The Empty Page Unfolding’. From the guttural riot grrl sneer of Deeply Unlovable and bleach-esque chorus of Wardrobe Malfunction (addressing the impact of unrealistic beauty standards on women of all ages and the issue of transgender intolerance respectively) to the cinematic hopefulness of Big Wheel and joyfully wonky melody of title track Unfolding, this is a meaty, emotional and eclectic array of songs. Lead single Turbulence is a brooding anthem in the vein of QOTSA meets PJ Harvey with poignant lyrics about music providing an essential lifeline in times of trouble. If you’re looking for that lifeline look no further.
The Empty Page will be continuing to win hearts and minds all over the UK with their visceral live performance in September and October. Keep an eye on their twitter, facebook, songkick, bandcamp or whatever your chosen medium for keeping track of bands is. You can pre-order the album now via pledge music and the album is released to the general public on Vociferous Records from all the usual retailers on October 17th 2016.
